Summer Counting Clip Cards Build Number Recognition and Fine Motor Practice
These printable summer cards help preschoolers count pictures, match numerals from 1 to 10 and practice using clothespins.

Counting practice is easier to fit into a summer day when the setup is simple. These printable number clip cards pair familiar seasonal pictures with a quick task: count the images, choose the matching numeral and attach a clothespin to it. The activity gives preschoolers a hands-on way to work on counting, number recognition and small hand movements at the same time.
The cards can suit a preschool classroom, a homeschool routine or a short activity at the kitchen table. You can bring out a few at a time, so the practice can match a child’s current comfort with counting. There’s no need to prepare the full set for every session.
What children do with the cards
Each card shows a group of pictures and three number choices. A child counts the pictures, looks for the numeral that represents the total, then clips a clothespin onto that choice. Pointing to each picture while counting can help children keep track and avoid skipping or counting an image twice.
The clothespin adds a physical step to the number activity. Squeezing it open and releasing it takes practice, too, so a child who finds that part challenging can count with an adult and get help clipping the answer. As their hands get more comfortable, they can take on more of the task themselves.
What’s in the printable set
The PDF contains 20 cards covering the numbers 1 through 10. Each number appears on two cards, paired with different summer pictures. The images include sunshine, flip-flops, beach balls, seashells, ice cream cones and popsicles.
- 20 cards in color.
- The same 20 cards in black and white.
- Two cards for each number from 1 to 10.
- 10 PDF pages in the complete download.
Both color and black-and-white versions are included. Choose the one that fits your printer and materials. The black-and-white pages can also be colored by children before or after the counting activity, adding another quiet task around the same pictures.

Prepare the cards with a few supplies
To get started, you’ll need the printable, paper or cardstock, scissors and clothespins. A laminator is optional. Regular paper works for a short activity, while cardstock makes the cards sturdier. If you expect to bring them out repeatedly or share them among several children, laminating can help the cards hold up over time.
- Print the pages you want. Pick either the color or black-and-white version. You can print the whole set or begin with only a few cards.
- Cut out the cards. Follow the outlines to separate each card from the page.
- Laminate if useful. If you choose to laminate, cut the cards apart first, then trim around each one again after laminating. Leave a small sealed edge around the card.
- Set out the clothespins. Keep the cards and pins together in a basket or bag so they’re ready when you want to use them.
Regular-size and mini clothespins are both options. Choose pins a child can open and close comfortably. If the clip is difficult to squeeze, an adult can help with that part while the child focuses on counting and choosing the numeral.

Start small, then add cards
Invite your child to choose a card and count the pictures aloud. Pointing to each one gives the count a clear rhythm and makes it easier to see which images have already been counted. When the count is finished, look together at the three numerals along the bottom and find the one that matches.
If counting is still new, begin with cards showing smaller groups and keep the rest aside. Bringing out only a handful can make the activity manageable and leave room to repeat a card without turning practice into a long session. Add more cards as your child is ready.
You can also count together at first. Say each number as you point, then ask your child to find the matching numeral. Some children may know the count but need time to recognize the written number; others may identify the numeral and need help keeping track of the pictures. The cards let you notice which step needs more practice.
These cards can fit into a summer preschool math center, homeschool preschool, kindergarten counting practice or a quiet activity while an older sibling works on a lesson. They’re also an indoor option for a hot or rainy day. The same basic routine works across these settings: choose a card, count the pictures, match the number and clip the answer.
